Salkantaytrek – 5d/4n

Day 1 CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – SORAYPAMPA – LAGUNA HUMANTAY

Very early we leave Cusco, heading to the village of Mollepata (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), where you have the option to have breakfast if you haven’t already done so and also do last minute shopping. Then we continue for 1 hour to Challacancha (3,675 m / 12,057 ft) where our trail crew (cook, muleteers, mules) will give us a warm welcome and then prepare for our adventure. During the first part we will observe the Nevado de Humantay (5,917 m / 19,413 ft). Arriving at our camp Soraypampa (3,900 m / 12,631 ft), place of our lunch and also observe the impressive mountain of Salkantay.  In the afternoon we have the hike to the beautiful lagoon of Humantay, where we will have time to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the lagoon and glaciers. Return to the camp for tea time and enjoy dinner and finally rest.

Day 2 SORAYPAMPA – ABRA DE SALKANTAY – CHAULLAY

We will wake up at 5:30 a.m., enjoy breakfast and begin the hike to the highest point of the entire route: the Salkantay pass (4,650 m.a.s.l.) through a rocky and steep trail (7 km / 3 hours). This stretch will demand the physical endurance of the passengers as well as a good acclimatization. At this point there will be a brief rest while appreciating incredible views of the snow-capped Salkantay. Later we will descend to Wayraqmachay where we will have lunch. We will resume the hike for 2.5 hours until we reach Chaullay where we will spend the night in the camp.

Day 3 CHAULLAY – PLAYA ROSALINAS – LUCMABAMBA

At approximately 7:00 a.m. we will begin our journey (17 km / 6 hours approximately) to the small ranch of La Playa. On the way we will enjoy the exuberant landscape: rivers, waterfalls, wild orchids and coffee, banana, avocado, passion fruit and granadilla plantations. We also pass through the village of Collpapampa also known as “the top of the cloud forest”. After a few hours we arrive at Sahuayaco Beach, where we have lunch included and then continue to our camp in Lucmabamba, where we can visit the coffee plantations and the process.

Day 4 LUCMABAMBA – LLACTAPATA – AGUAS CALIENTES

We will wake up around 06:00 hrs. and enjoy an energetic breakfast, then we will walk in the middle of the high jungle appreciating a great variety of crops including coffee, banana, avocado, pineapple and some crops of coca leaves, the sacred leaf of the Incas. We will ascend to Llactapata an Inca archaeological site from where you can see a part of Machu Picchu and the entire valley that surrounds it, this place was formerly used by the Inca culture as a resting place and also as a temple, the Inca priests offered to their Gods the best products. In front of this temple is Machu Picchu, one of the majestic and intact constructions of the Inca Culture. After our visit we will descend to the Aobamba Valley for about 2 hours until we arrive to Hidroelectrica or Intiwatana called this way in the Inca time, in this place we will have lunch and then we will walk for 3 hours which are approximately 10 km to Machu Picchu Pueblo (2,160 m / 7,087 ft). Upon arrival to Aguas Calientes, we will go to your hotel.

Day 5 AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHUPICCHU – POROY – CUSCO

This day after breakfast we go to the bus station to board our bus to Machu Picchu and see how spectacular is the citadel of Machu Picchu, “old peak”, considered a jewel of Inca architecture: with neighborhoods, squares, houses, agricultural areas, roads, observatories, etc. Built on one of the flanks of the old mountain in the middle of semi-tropical vegetation. It was built on one of the flanks of the old mountain and discovered on July 24, 1911 by the North American explorer Hiram Bingham. We will have a guided tour for 2 hours, where we will visit the most representative places of the Inca citadel of Machupicchu. After the visit, we have some free time to continue taking some pictures and optionally we can visit the mountain of Huayna Picchu; from where we have beautiful views of Machu Picchu. Later we return to Aguas Calientes and then we go to the train station to go to Ollantaytambo and then transfer to your hotel.
